Project workshop
In project workshop today we looked at reasons why we would want to protest. We had a class discussion about our own personal beliefs and protests or marches we had personally been to. I chose to protest about gay/ LGBT rights. We then designed slogans to go on a sign at a protest or march. I chose “THIS IS ME!! GET OVER IT!!”
We then started to develop 4 actions or moves that reflected protest. I was in a group with Ghazall and we came up with four moves that reflected feminism and being yourself.

Me and Ghazall were then put into a group with Faith and Sonnah, we combined our moves to create a movement piece. We rehearsed this a few times so we could see how our moves could combine to make a seamless piece. Then we performed it alongside the other group at the same time to show a group of protesters.

Research on LGBT rights
LGBT rights has been an issue worth the fight for years. Every year people come together and celebrate freedom, acceptance and love at pride all over the world. However being part of the LGBT community hasn’t always been so easy. In my opinion the UKs laws regarding LGBT topics were put in place recently and should have been changed sooner:
  • In 2005 it became legal to change genders
  • In 2010 gender expression and sexual orientation discrimination became a criminal offence
  • In 2001 the age of consent was made 16
  • In 1967 same sex intercourse was decriminalised in men but it had always been for women.

I watched a video called “Homophobia in 2018”. The video surrounds 2 men walking through a park just trying to say goodbye to each other. However the 2 gay men encounter hatred and discrimination on the way. The video is in poetic form each line rhyming to create a never ending feel to the video, which makes it feel more painful for the 2 men.

I also listened to and studied the lyrics to my favourite song: “Loving someone” by The 1975. The song outlines the hardship that LGBT people face and how we are all equal. This song gave me motivation for a character in the piece and made me understand how it would feel to not be accepted and loved, I hope to reflect these feelings in my performance.

12/11/18
Project workshop
In project today we warmed up and practised the piece a few times so we could get back into it and remember what we had previously added onto it. We worked on putting our pieces together to create a narrative and make it look slick. We added in moments of synchronisation and stillness and slow motion to create a dramatic effect.

13/11/18
Project workshop
Today we rehearsed what we had devised so far for our movements piece. We added dialogue into the piece and each of us came forward to shout out protest slogan; “I am gay get over it!!” After we had cleaned the piece and made sure it looked seamless, a lady from the British Museum came into watch our movement piece. We received positive feedback: she told us our narrative was clear and that we looked like a group of angry protesters, which was our intent. Towards the end of the lessons we had a discussion about props and costume and how we would pull if the piece in the British Museum space. We wanted to hold up signs and I decided I was going to wear an all rainbow outfit to correlate with my protest and stand out.

19/11/18
Project workshop
This lesson after warming up we discussed the idea of solo performances within the piece. We had to devise a short performance with moves surrounding our personal protest. We discussed words/ feelings that related to our character we would be playing, this was useful as I felt I could create an emotional movement sequence based on my protest. The words that inspired me the most were: confused, unloved and accepted. I then created a short movement piece around these words.

I perfected my piece to make sure the story I was trying to tell was clear. I was then partnered with Bethany, who had the same protest as me. We combined our solos to make a duo showing the story of 2 confused LGBT outcasts.

20/11/18
Project workshop
In project workshop today we rehearsed our group piece a few times and then worked out how we were going to put our duos into the performance. Me and Bethany polished our moves to make them as fluid as possible so that it flowed well in the piece. Our piece was put in first and we came running forward and fell to the floor, we than performed our piece whilst other duos came forwards starting their pieces too. This made for a cannon ending with us all ending at different times.

Then Nick from the British Museum came in to review our piece. Again we received positive feedback from a member of the British Museum. He said he could see how passionate we were about our personal protests and we even shared our ideas for costumes and props with him which he seemed to think would be effective.

After Nick had left we continued working on the piece and polishing parts of it that were out of time or not in sync. We worked on coordinating our moves and our timing when saying out slogans and the line: “our opinions matter”. Our piece was starting to come together and seem my more professional and slick.

Project workshop
Today in project workshop we rehearsed our “I Object” piece and made sure it was ready to perform as we would be performing it in a few days in front of our peers. We discussed how we could improve the piece and adapt it for the 2 different venues we would be performing in. We discussed how we would have to protect more in the British museum environment as it is a bigger space to fill. I felt as though our performance was going to be successful and effective in both environments and I was excited to show everyone what we had been working on.

Our final performances
Our first performance was in the WKC theatre:

Our main performance and the one we had been working up to was in the British museum retunda:
